A Major Upgrade In MTB Rim Production & Serial Number

After around 8 months testing, the new manufacture process performs much better than the old process. During these 8 months, we get almost no rim crack issue for new process(around 4100pcs new process rims are sold during these 8 months, only a few spoke hole pulled out at the beginning. And after we solved the spoke hole process. We haven't got any rim crack issue). But for the old process, there are some crack issue after customers' a few months riding.

So, all wide,29er all mountain rim, 27.5er rim and New 26er DH rim(33mm wide&30mm deep rim) are now all used new process. And For new process rims, only can be available for Light-bicycle. We haven't sold to any other local trade companies.

Some trade companies will sell the rims with old manufacture process at cheap price(some are the old process stock ones). If customers likes rim strong & with new process, please contact light-bicycle team. We will provide good rims & good after-sell service for all of you.

Big change- new manufacture process is applied for Mountain Bike(MTB) carbon rim

The first two is for mold serial number. "12" standard for MR12( RM29C07 rim mold).

The third letter, " M" stands for matte finish, " G" stands for glossy finish.

The next two is spoke count, "32" stands for 32H spoke holes.

The coming 6 numbers is for other number on our order list, like "917901" means your order is "917901" serial number on our order list.

For the old process & stock ones, it starts with " SDXXXXXXXXX", or without serial number. Because the serial number is invisible sometimes for the old process.

I'm trying to decide between 27mm and 30mm rims 1. can you send me the section drawings and any structural testing comparing the 27mm to the 30mm rims? 2. do you have both the 27 and the 30 with the new hookless design? 3. I'm a 75kg XC rider but I just failed my old-style 30mm carbon rim. Are the new 27mm rims comparable in strength to the old 30mm rims? 4. How do I order a set of wheels with 28 spokes front, 32 rear? 5. do you have pictures of the matte UD, 3k and 12K? Thanks, Steve

Light-Bicycle 2015/02/28

Hello Steven, Sorry for the late reply. We are on Chinese New Year vacation from Feb 15th to Feb 26th, so can not reply the emails in time. -For 27mm & 30mm width rims, do you prefer 650B or 29er? Please find attached rims cross-section drawings. The 30mm width rim will be much wider and stronger. -Yes, both rims are with hookless design. Hookless is more durable. -If you ride XC aggressively, we recommend hookless 30mm width rim. It is much stronger. And the new hookless 27mm width rim will stronger than 30mm width rim with hook. -If you like order wheels, we have Novatec & Hope hubs for you. Which do you prefer? What hub axle size do you like for front & rear? Standard qr or thru axle? Then we can quote the price for wheels accordingly. -For 3k/12k/UD, please find attached pictures. It is the outer carbon fiber layer to make the carbon fiber with different outlook, and all the inside carbon fiber are the same. So, the rim strength & weight is almost the same. 3k matte &UD matte are more popular. Thanks, Light-bicycle

Hi Can the am 29 er rim wide be used with straight pull spokes? Or is the tension too high

Light-Bicycle 2014/06/30

Hello Phil, Thanks for your inquiry. If you ride AM, then I recommend you the 35mm wide 29er hookless AM rim. Please find the attached cross-section drawing of rim. https://www.lightbicycle.com/35mm-wide-29er-rims-beadless-for-bicycle-trail-or-mountain-bike-enduro-with-tubeless-compatibility.html#.U7EMCPmSyWw For the rims, do you prefer UD, 3k or 12k? Matte or glossy? 32H? http://www.flickr.com/photos/light-bicycle/sets/72157631432948364/detail/ The rims here are OK for the straight pull spokes. The nipple holes are strong for the wheels building. You can purchase the rims only from here and buy the straight pull spokes and hubs in your place, then thay work well. Thanks, Light-bicycle

Jonnie 2014/06/11

Hi LB team, my 26" 33mm DH rims arrived today. The serial number code starts with 06M - are these made with old or new process? regards Jonnie

Light-Bicycle 2014/06/12

Hello Jonnie, Hi Jonnie, Thanks for your support! The rims we sent you are with new manufacture process. Don’t worry. All our mtb rims are used new process now. Because the serial number of new process have been changed already, to make it more usefully for production to see the order information. The serial number rule is as below now. For example, if the rim serial number is 06M32831601: - “06” means 26C03. It is the rim mold called “MR06”. - “M” means the rim weave is Matte. If it is “G”, it is glossy. - “32” means the spoke count is 32H. - “8316” means the order number on our order list. - “01” means the first rim of your order. We will update this on our website soon, to prevent from confusion for other customers. Thanks, Light-bicycle

hello, i was wondering if the road clincher 38mm carbon rims without braketrack are also made with the same new process. if not,is it the old one or maybe another process? i'm buying these for a cyclocross disc brake frame and thinking of taking the 32 holes option instead of the 28 after reading this article. thanks for your time regards, filip

Light-Bicycle 2013/12/16

Hello Filip, For the process, it is for mtb rims, not for road rims. For road rims, they are manufactured with different process. Thanks, Light-bicycle

Richard 2013/12/22

Why is the new process not used for road rims too? Will road rims use the new process in the future?

Light-Bicycle 2013/12/22

Hello Richard, Hello Richard, For all road rims, now they are with new process also. We have started to use new process these days. Thanks, Light-bicycle
